When I started my first CakePHP project in early 2006, while still a Computer Science student at UBC, I was more frustrated than impressed. I blame this mostly on the lack of documentation that existed back then (from what I remember there was a single blog example that always seemed outdated). I had used Java servlets and the Spring Framework previously, so the MVC part was farmiliar, but all of the naming conventions were not.
What got me through these tough times? The CakePHP IRC channel. So, incase any CakePHP bakers (or developers that are considering baking) do not know about the IRC channel, I thought I would pass on the details. I use a web-based IRC client called Mibbit. Goto mibbit.com and choose these options:
Connect to IRC: freenode.net Nick: something unique Channel(s): #cakephp
Then just click GO! The CakePHP community is very helpful - they are probably the main reason I ended up sticking with CakePHP as my framework of choice. I've spent hours on a problem before without success, and then figured it out within minutes after explaining my dilema in the channel. Happy baking.
